INTRODUCCIÓN
La especie Prosopis juliflora (Sw.) DC. (Mimosaceae), conocida comúnmente
como “cují yaque” y “algarrobo”, es un arbusto armado o árbol pequeño de 9 a 17
m de altura, con un tronco de 0,3 a 1,3 m de diámetro, de crecimiento rápido,
fijador de nitrógeno, tolerante a condiciones áridas y suelos salinos, a
precipitaciones anuales de 150 a 1670 mm, a temperatura de 20,3 a 28,5º C y a pH
cercano a 7,0; además constituye una especie leñosa dominante en el matorral
xerófilo secundario de la Planicie de Maracaibo, estado Zulia, Venezuela (Ewel y
Madriz 1968, Global Invasive Species Datebase 2006, Vera et al. 2007).
La especie P. juliflora además posee la capacidad de brindar sombra a través de
su copa o follaje para favorecer el establecimiento, crecimiento y desarrollo de
diversas especies vegetales (Vera et al. 2007, Finol et al. 2020). En las regiones
áridas y semiáridas, la situación expuesta genera modificaciones ambientales en el
espacio físico debajo del dosel de estas plantas; asociadas a la intercepción
lumínica de la radiación solar, la disminución de la temperatura del aire (cambios
en la sensación térmica), variaciones en la humedad y en la circulación del viento
(Ribaski y Menezes 2002).
Este proceso “bondadoso de otorgar albergue” se conoce como facilitación, y
es una interacción ecológica que se produce entre una planta nodriza, con
capacidad de colonizar un ambiente severo y modificar el microambiente bajo su
copa, mientras que las especies beneficiarias, menos tolerantes al estrés ambiental,
crecen bajo ésta. Las diferencias en el nicho de establecimiento entre nodrizas y
facilitadas supone que las especies que interactúan mediante la facilitación poseen
rasgos funcionales diferentes, lo que les permite coexistir; y a escala de paisaje,
esto incrementa la diversidad (Navarro-Cano et al. 2019, González Pendás et al.
2020, Carpenedo et al. 2020).
