Canine ehrlichiosis in Pungarabato, Guerrero, Mexico. Case report
Abstract
Canine Ehrlichiosis is an infectious disease transmitted by ticks, produced by Ehrlichia spp. It is distributed worldwide, most frequently in tropical and subtropical regions, with an increase in cases between April and September due to the higher incidence of ticks. Ehrlichia spp., is obligate intracellular microorganisms that infect leukocytes; they tend to embed themselves in the cytoplasm of blood cells in morulae. A clinical case of a female canine was presented, with a history of ticks and clinical signs of anemia. Anemia and thrombocytopenia were found in the blood count. In blood smears, basophilic morulae were observed in neutrophils; they were compatible with Ehrlichia spp. The SNAP 4Dx® (IDEXX) test was performed, which confirms the diagnosis of Ehrlichiosis. The patient was administered Doxycycline for a total of 30 days and other drugs. Treatment with Doxycycline was satisfactory, because the patient recovered after 30 days of treatment.
