Screening for neoplastic liver lesions: How early can we get?

Pesquisaje de lesiones neoplásicas de hígado: ¿Cómo llegar a ellas antes?

Keywords: hepatocellular carcinoma, surveillance, screening, risk population, detection

Abstract

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is one of the most prevalent cancers, worldwide representing the fifth most common cancer and the second cause of cancer related mortality. Cirrhosis has been recognized as the most important risk factor for the development of HCC; however it can also occur in patients without cirrhosis. HCC is often asyntomatic until an advanced stage when the therapeutic and effective options are limited. Therefore a diagnosis is necessary in the early stages when the tumor is susceptible to being treated thereby improving survival. For these reasons its mandatory the identification of the population at risk in order to apply screening and surveillance programs, to reduce the mortality. These must be cost effective, being the ultrasound alone or in combination with the alpha fetoprotein every 6 months, recommended by the liver societies.
