Invasive devices used in the intensive care unit for pediatric patients with pneumonia
Abstract
The objective of the research was to relate the variables on invasive devices used in the stay in the Intensive Care Unit and the occurrence of pneumo- nia in patients from 1 to 5 years of age, within the Hospital Dr. Francisco Icaza Bustamante, during the period October 2019 to October 2020. It is a research with quantitative, descriptive-correlational paradigm, with a non-experimental-transversal research design. The sample consisted of 91 patients between 1 and 5 years old, who were admitted to this ICU without confirmed respiratory infection with a waiting time for admission of no more than 3 days, using their clinical records for data collection, to then be analyzed with the Microsoft Excel 360 program, through organized and statistical tables. A total of 91 patients were analyzed, the majority being male (53%), 4 years old (24%), classified as surgical patients (44%). Regarding invasive devi- ces, there was predominance of endotracheal tube (48%), followed by central venous catheter (26%) and tracheostomy (23%). There is a significant sta- tistical association (p<0.05) between the use of the orotracheal tube and the presence of pneumonia, which raises the interest of reinforcing health care protocols to reduce the morbidity of this in-hospital infection.
