Pancreatic enzymes in patients with suspected acute pancreatitis in Ecuador
Abstract
To diagnose acute pancreatitis (AP) it is essen-tial to determine pancreatitis enzymes. The objec-tive of this study is to analyze the characteristics of patients with suspected AP in whom Amylase and serum Lipase were determined, attended in a General Hospital of Ecuador. This research is des-criptive, retrospective and transversal. The clinical histories of patients with suspected AP during the year 2016 were reviewed. 200 histories were found, but 158 (79%) resulted PA. The average age was 51.4±13.01 years, predominantly female (58.23%), 50% were over 45 years old, 13.92% (22 cases) corresponded to severe PA and the etiology the most common was biliary (56.33%). In all patients the serum amylase serum concentration was three times higher than the normal level (up to 220 U/l), while 27.22% showed values higher than 500 U/l for the lipase (Normal value up to 60 U/). No pa-tient died. The characteristics of our patients were those expected in hospitalized patients, it is impor-tant to highlight the absence of deceased patients even though they are data from a small sample. It is advisable to detect and treat this pathology in a timely manner, in order to avoid complications such as pancreatic necrosis, infections and multiple or-gan failure.
