Diagnostic methods used in thromboembolic disease during pregnancy
Abstract
Thromboembolic disease represents a significant risk for pregnant women, being among the
10 leading causes of maternal death in developed countries. Its incidence in pregnant women is
approximately 1 to 2 per 1,000 pregnancies. The aim of the research was to review the literature on
the diagnostic methods used in thromboembolic disease during pregnancy. The study was descriptive,
retrospective, meta-analysis, review articles, observational, descriptive, retrospective studies,
authors’ opinions related to diagnostic methods in thromboembolic disease during pregnancy were
reviewed. The diagnostic approach to pulmonary embolism should combine clinical suspicion, risk
factors and imaging studies. The YEARS algorithm made it possible to safely rule out pulmonary
thromboembolism during pregnancy and to avoid exposure to radiation from unnecessary imaging
techniques, such as computed tomography pulmonary angiography. The importance of this research
lies in the need to know all the diagnostic strategies currently used in pulmonary thromboembolism in
pregnant patients.
