A theater for Maracaibo: The Baralt of Eichner
Abstract
The architectural object as part of the collective memory is a clear example of the tangible heritage, but this, in turn, in its pre-materialization stage, i.e. in its draft form, can be considered part of the intangible heritage, especially if the building is not erected in the end. Such is the case of the draft prepared by the German engineer Heinrich Eichner of a Theatre for Maracaibo that was to replace the Baralt Theatre built in 1888. This project met the necessities that had sentenced the nineteenth-century theater to its destruction, but this was not enough for this proposal to become a reality. In the end, it was decided that the project developed by the Belgian engineer León Höet was to be built instead, leaving Eichner’s proposal as part of the memory of a Theatre for Maracaibo
