Frecuencia de desove en tilapias (Oreochromis spp.) criadas bajo condiciones intensivas en el pie de monte andino venezolano / Frequency of spawning in tilapias (Oreochromis spp.) reared under intensive conditions in the Venezuelan Andean foothill
Abstract
A study was conducted to evaluate the spawning frequency (FD) in two varieties of tilapia, Chitralada (Oreochromis niloticus) and Red Taiwanese (O. mossambicus x O. niloticus), reared in intensive conditions in the lower area of Trujillo state, Venezuela. It was used a 2 x 2 x 3 factorial arrangement: two strains, two sizes (small and large), and three sex relationship (1♀:1♂; 2♀:1♂; 3♀:1♂). The strain affected the FD that was greater (P<0.01) in Chitralada (14.86%) than in the Taiwanese females (6.0%). No differences were found among sizes of Chitralada strain (P>0.05), although the small Taiwanese females were more reproductively active than the Chitralada ones. The sex ratio 1♀:1♂ was similar among strains (14.8 versus 8.3% for Chitralada and Taiwanese females respectively; P>0.05). The best sex relationship was 3♀:1♂ for Chitralada strain. It was concluded that throughout the study, Chitralada had a greater FD than Taiwanese tilapia.
