Parasite fauna in bats of the eastern plains of Venezuela

Keywords: Deciduous forest, Riparian forest, Endoparasites, Morichales, Parasitic richness

Abstract

Research on parasites in Neotropical bats is relatively scarce compared to other vertebrates. The objective of this study was to describe and analyze the composition and diversity of parasites of bat species present in various environments in the Eastern Plains of Venezuela. Bats populations associated with deciduous forests (BD), riparian forests (BR) and Morichales (M) were sampled. The species richness and composition were 31, grouped in four families, the predominant ones being Phyllostomidae (17) and Vespertilionidae (6). A total of 4595 parasites were obtained. 2250 corresponded to ectoparasites from 10 families with numerical dominance of Trombiculidae and values of Prevalence (P %) = 23.33, Mean Intensity (MI) = 19.53, Mean Abundance (MA) = 4.56 and an Infection Index (ii) = 1.063. 2345 helminths from nine families with numerical dominance of Hymenolepididae and values of P % = 12.50, MI = 83.95, MA = 10.49 and an ii = 1.312. Analysis of variance found no significant differences between habitat types [F (3, 36) = 1.02, p = 0.396], [F (3, 32) = 1.08, p = 0.371]. Between BD and BR there were significant differences for ectoparasites [F (1, 18) = 6.20, p = 0.023]. The highest values of P %, IM, AM and ii, as well as the average dominance (D = 0.40) were associated with the Morichal habitat. The highest parasitic richness was recorded at BR with 17 species, with an average parasitic diversity of H' = 2.33.
